Explore the Cold War Airport and Military Base “Klek Object 505”

Barracks are located right at the entrance to the military complex, adjacent to the village of Željava. The initial area contains dozens of buildings that served as command centers, barracks, classrooms, mechanical workshops, generators, kitchens, etc. The courtyard of the barracks also features playgrounds and training areas for personnel.

At the entrance to the base, you’ll also find the Douglas C-47 aircraft. Originally used for transporting and parachuting troops, Tito received it as a gift at the end of World War II. You can explore the plane’s interior, sit in the cockpit, and take pictures.

Runways are constructed at the exits of the tunnels and are interconnected. There are takeoff and landing runways, as well as auxiliary runways nearby. A missile defense system is also installed along the runways to protect the entire airport.

Tunnels are 3 kilometers from the barracks, with four entrances built into the mountain. The entrances are designed in the shape of a MiG-21 aircraft. Inside Mount Plješivica, all tunnels are interconnected, allowing access from any tunnel to any other. In addition to the main tunnels where aircraft were stationed, numerous smaller tunnels and rooms were excavated in Plješivica, serving for the operation and management of the airport as well as providing shelter for personnel in case Željava came under atomic attack.
