Experience Village Life and Wild Nature in Martin Brod

About this experience

Experience authentic village life in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Krajina region. Situated within the National Park Una, you’ll be surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of the Una River and its natural environment.

You’ll have the opportunity to visit the village of Martin Brod and learn about the local way of life there. You can support the local community by purchasing handmade and agricultural products. You can also participate in village activities such as tending to horses, feeding the domestic animals, and helping with the fieldwork.

You will enjoy homemade local food and drinks prepared exclusively in the household. You can also help prepare the food and learn authentic regional recipes.

Activities

Visit the Rmanj Monastery, a Serbian Orthodox monastery dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The monastery was originally built in the 15th century and is known for its unique construction using tufa from the Una River. Explore the monastery’s architecture and learn about its historical and cultural significance.

Experience the breathtaking Milančev buk, within the Una National Park. This series of rapids creates a stunning complex of waterfalls and cascades with a total height of 54 meters. Take in the natural beauty of the Una River as it flows through the village of Martin Brod.

Explore the rest of the village and witness the cascades running between scenic village houses.

Walk the “Marta’s path” through the woods and listen to the tragic story about this girl’s love.

The old “bučnica,” also known as the “eco washing machine,” is a unique attraction in the Reljić family household. Operated solely by the power of pure mountain water, this traditional device does not require electricity or detergent. You will witness a demonstration of this eco-friendly laundry method, skillfully operated by Marija using an ordinary metal rod to regulate the power of the water. The process is an authentic representation of how laundry was traditionally done in the region, offering impressive results without polluting the environment.

You will also experience the traditional milling process of buckwheat, corn, and wheat flour at the estate. The family grinds these flours using an old watermill, a common feature in households in Martin Brod in the past. You will have the opportunity to purchase these freshly ground flours and get to know the traditional agricultural practices of the region.

Explore the rest of the estate where Marija grows organic vegetables, and makes jams, liqueurs, and juices with the possibility of tasting and buying products you like.

Join Marija and her husband Dragan for lunch and taste homemade brandy, pies, dried meat, and sausages. You can also purchase souvenirs and homemade delicacies from Marija’s estate.
